
ITALA D'OTTAVIANO
Itala M. Loffredo D’Ottaviano is graduated in mathematics from the Pontifical
Catholic University of Campinas (PUC-Campinas), Brazil (1966), and has a
degree in music (piano) from the Carlos Gomes Musical Conservatory of
Campinas (1960). She has a master's degree (1974) and a doctorate (1982) in
mathematics, both from the University of Campinas (Unicamp). She had
postdoctoral fellowships at the University of California–Berkeley, Stanford
University, and the University of Oxford. She is currently Researcher of the
Centre for Logic, Epistemology and the History of Science and Full Professor
(Collaborator) of Logic and the Foundations of Mathematics at the Department of
Philosophy of the University of Campinas. She is a founding member of the
Centre for Logic, Epistemology and History of Science (CLE) at Unicamp, and of
the Brazilian Logic Society (SBL). She was the director of CLE for four terms
(1986-1992, 2004-2009), the president of SBL for four terms (1993-2003, 2011-
2014), president of the Latin-American Committee on Logic of the Association for
Symbolic Logic for two terms (1995-2000) and head of the Coordination Center
for Interdisciplinary Research (COCEN) at Unicamp for two terms (1998-2002,
2009-2013). She is a member of several scientific societies, member and
president of several academic boards and editorial boards, executor of several
academic agreements between Unicamp and other Brazilian and non-Brazilian
institutions, and invited speaker and visiting professor in several universities.
D’Ottaviano is the creator and editor of Coleção CLE, a collection of books in the
areas of logic, epistemology, and history of science, with almost 100 published
volumes. She has been researcher of several interdisciplinary international
research projects and her areas of expertise are logic and the foundations of
mathematics, history and philosophy of science, algebra of logic, non-classical
logics, universal logic, and self-organization and systems theory. She was
Provost of Graduate Studies at Unicamp in 2013-2014. She was granted some
honors and awards, among them the “Aristotle Medal” by the Academy of
Sciences and Humanities of the Stagira Institute of Higher Studies of Mexico, an
award given to Mexican and foreign researchers who have carried out research
or teaching for the benefit of society, and the creation, by the Brazilian Logic
Society, of the “Itala Maria Loffredo D’Ottaviano Lecture”, a Special Session of
the regular Brazilian Logic Conferences. She is Researcher of the Brazilian
National Councill of Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), Brazil –
Level IA, the higher classification level in Brazil. She is a member of the Brazilian
Logic Society and of the Mexican Logic Academy and is an elected member of
the Brazilian Academy of Philosophy (ABF) and of the Académie Internationale
de Philosophie des Sciences (AIPS). She has recently been elected a member
of the Institut International de Philosophie (IIP).
